Having worked in the Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders Treatment Field for over five decades and as author, I am elated by this acculturation of Uppers, Downers,All Arounders into a common Spanish language edition. It addresses two major themes about this medical disorder that I have tried to raise awareness of throughout my career. First, addiction is an equal opportunity destroyer of human lives. Predisposed, vulnerable individuals who are exposed to addictive substances or behaviors can develop catastrophic consequences regardless of their ethnicity, social status, wealth, vocation, moral, intelligence, sexual orientation, culture, or spiritual origins. Second, better treatment outcomes result from interventions that are culturally consistent with each client’s background. So, this Spanish Edition is much overdue and genuinely welcomed. I am therefore deeply appreciative and indebted to Juntos Northwest and its Executive Director, Mr. Jose Luis Garcia, for motivation, guidance, and especially for taking the lead role in making this project a reality. I am confident that the knowledge provided by this book’s Spanish translation will result in better awareness and understanding of Substance- Awareness and Addictive Disorders that will inspire healthier lifestyles.

The Story
In 2023, driven by a bold mission to increase the number of Spanish-speaking Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors in the State of Oregon, Juntos NW embarked on a journey that would become historic, not only for our organization, but for our community.
Juntos NW committed to an ambitious and deeply meaningful project: the translation of the renowned book Uppers, Downers, and All Arounders 8th Edition, a cornerstone resource in the field of addiction education and counseling.
At the heart of this effort stood Jose Luis Garcia, carrying the immense responsibility, and pressure, of meeting with the legendary Dr. Darryl Inaba, the author and respected leader in substance use disorder education. In that meeting, Jose Luis personally requested Dr. Inaba’s permission to translate this powerful work into Spanish, knowing how many lives it could impact.
Dr. Inaba granted his permission, and with that single act of trust and generosity, what once felt like a distant vision suddenly became possible. With the support of Special Novels Inc., Alba Reboyras, and Eduardo A. Borges, and through the dedication of collaborators such as Josh Guerrero, along with the tireless commitment of the Juntos NW training team, including Ricardo Verdeguez and Ricardo Olade, the Spanish translation of this essential book became a powerful reality.
The translation took more than a year to complete. For a long time, we weren’t sure we could bring it to completion in the way it truly deserved, because we were determined to honor the work Dr. Inaba had devoted so much of his life to creating. But we persevered. When the final version was presented to Dr. Inaba, he responded with profound gratitude and genuine admiration for what Juntos NW had accomplished. In an extraordinary act of trust and support, Dr. Inaba granted Juntos NW the honor of becoming the sole distributor of the Spanish edition. But he did not stop there. Dr. Inaba went even further, expanding Juntos NW’s role to also distribute the English version of the book, ensuring that this partnership could create an even greater impact. Most remarkably, 90% of the book royalties will go directly to Juntos NW, supporting our direct service programs and training efforts across Oregon. This is more than a publishing accomplishment. This is a milestone in equity, education, and access. Juntos
